Simple Paddle Strop for Sharpening your Blades #shorts

When you own knives you need to keep them sharp. For that purpose I made this simple double sided paddle strop. It has top grain leather on one side, suede on the other side. That makes this paddle strop very versatile and perfect for honing the blades of your wood carving knives, pocked knives or any other knife that you own and carry. The paddle strop is super easy to make so give it a try!

Keep your knives sharp with a paddle strop like this one.

It is made from plywood and veg tan leather. Mark 7.5 by 30cm on an 18mm thick piece of wood and cut it out using a jigsaw. Draw the handle and cut it using a fine jigsaw blade. I rounded the handle using coarse sand paper and sanded all the sharp corners. Next drill and counter sink a hole, so you can hang this strop on your tool rack. This piece is a gift and the receiver wanted my mark branded into it. Optionally coat it with varnish, but remember to not coat the part where the glue goes.

Then I cut out two strips of 7.5 by 20 cm of 3mm thick veg tan leather and I broke the corners. Contact cement was applied to the wood and leather. After five minutes it was dry and both parts were pressed together firmly. I repeated this for the other side where the suede side goes up. The top grain side was roughened up with sand paper for adherence first. Contact cement is applied, dried and then these pieces are pressed together.
